My Hair Journey

I haven't really documented my hair journey well if I'm honest but I'll show you what I can!

1999/2000:

At age 9/10 I had my first relaxer

Summer 2009:

I started to get bored with my hair so I cut it to a bob and dyed it brown.

February 2010:

I had my last relaxer [wow, time flies]

April 2010:

I had put my hair into a protective style: Ghana weave. Around this this time I had watched Good Hair by Chris Rock and through that, I had stumbled across YouTube and decided that:

  1. I will transition for a year
  2. I will keep my hair in a protective style for that year.
NOTE: This style ruined my edges at the front and back. Loved this style though.

June 2011:

I had transitioned for a little of a year and decide to 'Big Chop'

July 2011:

Had a hard time getting used to my natural hair, so I did what a lot of naturals do, coloured it!!
I had use SoftSheen Carlson reddish-brownish colour. The red eventually washed out and I was left with a rather nice brown colour.

August 2011:

I was a bride's maid for my Uncles wedding, and they had insisted that I have a weave put in, which I protested against. I settled, and got my hair straightened by a method known in Kenya as, 'Blowdry Chioma'. This is basically when they literally fry your hair bone straight! ANYWAYS, I kept my hair like that for about a week and when I finally washed it out of my hair, I was more that overwhelmed with the smell of burnt hair! Much to my surprise, some of my hair stayed straight.
To add insult to injury it did a protein treatment and added an egg which, in hindsight, probably sealed the damage.

September 2011 - December 2012

I had been doing wash-and-gos for most of this period and this lead to breakage and Knot City!!

February 2012

I had taken out my protective style [Kinky Twists] and trimmed up to an inch in some places, because of all the knots plus, I want to lose as much of the heat damaged hair as possible.

Mid-July 2012

I had removed my weave and decided to started to actually start looking after my hair.
This means:
  • Establishing a hair care routine - keeping it as simple as possible
  • Staying clear of wash-and-gos
  • Trying to wean myself off brushes and combs for the most part, and start finger de-tangling
  • Get into the habit of hot oil treatments
  • Find ways of protective styling with my own hair as it is easier to moisturise and wash in them.
